Bruce family/ newborn session

Thanks to a friend of mine I was able to get my blog looking presentable and I decided to start blogging my sessions! This is my first one so go easy on me ;-) What I love about newborn sessions the most (I mean besides getting to hold tiny beautiful babies and play with little baby feet) is that as a photographer, you have the opportunity to have a special place in that baby's life. You get to be the one to capture these special moments and grow with them. I absolutely love when my newborn clients come back for a session once the baby turns 3, 6, or 9 months, 1 year, etc. Seriously, how cool is it to be the one that gets to track and capture their growth in the cutest way?! I've also been blessed with the opportunity of doing a birth session (will blog about that one next time). Anyway, what I am trying to say is us photographers take on a special role to that family. Back in October I had the opportunity to be the newborn and family photographer for the Bruce family. Here are some of my favorite captures from the session. I hope to have many more sessions with them in the future.

Lainey's Lemonade Party

This year we did my daughter's birthday party in a vintage lemonade stand theme. It was perfect, and I am excited to get to use the lemonade stand later this month for lemonade stand mini sessions! My husband and father in law are the one's I have to give credit for the lemonade stand. I showed them the general concept of how I wanted it to be, and then they went to work. It turned out even better then what I had in mind! They are so good at building things and always I am so blessed to have such handy men in my life!

Here are a few pictures from the party. My daughter, Lainey, turned 2 on April 24th, 2012. We waited until May to do the party so that we could have warmer weather and so that more family would be able to attend.

Thank you everyone for checking out my blog! Have a wonderful day <3

Live and Learn, everyday!

So it has taken me a while to figure out exactly how I wanted to say everything I have to say for this blog post. First of all, anything I say is not meant to offend anyone. I am simply talking about my experiences and things that I have learned over the past few months while being in the photography industry. I have learned so much in a short time, and have met some wonderful people who have helped me finally feel confident enough to write about this.

"Why is everyone copying me??"
This question is a common question that I have heard from quite a few photographers. We spend all this time thinking of new ideas and concepts to use for our sessions. Things that we really feel are showing a new side to our creativity, things that we feel really sets us apart from the other 100 photographers in our area (okay, maybe there aren't that many other photographers in your area, but it sure feels like it can be that way). You get done with the session, you post the previews on your blog or on Facebook and anxiously wait for all of the comments praising your abilities. You feel great and proud of yourself for doing something new, and you should! And then.. a few days/ weeks later you happen to come across another page for a local photographer and your jaw drops. They have the same prop, in the same location, and even attempted to shoot from the same angle (or so it appears). That sucks. All of a sudden that feeling of originality that you keep so close to your heart slips away and now you feel as if someone is stealing your thunder. Okay now maybe its not as dramatic as how I described, but it could be. I have seen so many different photographers complain about this very circumstance. Now, I can understand in some cases where it continually happens and its by the same person, that it can get a little frustrating.. but please try to remember, this isn't always the case. So many things become a trend in photography. You may think you are being original, but now with the power of google and pinterest (or probably just the internet in general) it is rare to think of original ideas that have never been done before. If your inspiration is coming from something online, then it isn't original! I know how hard it can be when you see someone else imitating what you feel is your idea, but please try to not put so much focus on it. Its going to happen sometime during your journey of being a photographer. Even when people try to really copy everything you have done in a shot, its still impossible to get the same look and feel. The only thing that can be original and unique in photography is YOU. Which leads me to my next topic....

"I just want to be myself..."
I have seen so many people struggle with what exactly they want to accomplish by being a photographer. Some do it for fun, others do it for money, and some do it for both fun and money. Its so exciting when you first start and you are ready to take on any session you can get. You start promoting, you do sessions for free or dirt cheap to help build your portfolio. Some take on too much and never have the time to really get to know what they want to do. I really feel its important to take the time and experience different types of sessions to figure out what you can/ want to do and what you can't/ don't want to do.  When I first started I did all of this- the free/ cheap sessions (still do sometimes!), took on everything that came my way, and was more focused on the fact that I could be making money with this skill rather than doing it because I loved it. Which is normal, you start up a new business and of course your main motivator is going to be money. Business=Money. And it was stressful.. I kept thinking that when people weren't booking it meant they didn't like my work. I couldn't understand why people weren't booking.
Was I not advertising right? Was I trying to reach the wrong market? Did I just suck at photography? What was going on?! I saw people booking with all of these other photographers that I felt my work was just as good as, but why them and not me? Well sad to say this thinking is typical of me.. I expect things to just work and go the way I plan of course. Haha. So I moped for a while and then all of a sudden one day it clicked. (haha get it, clicked, like a camera.. ok done with corny jokes). I thought about all of the things I REALLY want to accomplish by being a photographer, and none of the things involved me making a bunch of money. So once I took the "all-business mentality" I had, out of my business, all of the stress went away. Now I'm not saying stop thinking about making money, because if this is what you do for an income of course you will think about that. What I am saying is I stopped looking at money as a main motivator for what you do. In art there is no way money can be your inspiration. It has to be something else. It has to be a feeling or a memory, something that can stay with you no matter what. Money will come and go, but I really feel that you can't truly grow as an artist until you stop looking at money as your main motivator. As soon as I stopped trying to sell my service I really feel I learned so much about what I truly want to do as an artist. I have decided this is not a competition, I am not doing this to compete with anyone else and try to get as many customers as I can. I want people to come to me because they actually like my work, not because my prices are good. If we can all get back to what it is we love so much about photography, it will show in our work and the money will come with the customers that love our work so much. Just be you and do what you love, that's what this is about!!

Once again, these are my opinions based off of my personal experiences and may not be your idea of how things are and that is okay :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and please feel free to leave any comments you may have! (please keep it constructive and positive) <3

Sincerly,

It's been a while....

Hello Buttercup's, sorry it's been a while since I have posted! I have been so busy in my adventure of starting up the photography side of my business, and I am thrilled to have a moment to make a blog post finally.

I have so many fun projects planned for this summer, I am so excited! Some of it is still in the works so I can't really go into details yet.. but it's going to be AWESOME!! (I know, I'm sorry... I don't like when people tell me they have something to tell me but then tell me they can't tell me.. its just plain mean, sorry!) For now though, I will share some pictures and let you know some of what I will be up to soon.

In about a week I will be going on a train and riding 16 hours away from home to meet my husband where he works. You may be thinking why in the world does he work 16 hours away? Well he works in North Dakota for 2 weeks and then comes back home (Washington) for 2 weeks. It actually works well for us. We all miss each other like crazy when he is gone, but the 2 weeks with him home are always amazing. We get to spend more time together as a family this way, which most people don't realize.. they just focus on the 2 weeks he is gone, not the 2 weeks we have to do whatever. Anyway, back to talking about my trip.. I have never gone on a trip this far away on my own. I am excited and nervous at the same time LOL. We will be driving back and staying a few nights along the way. I am so happy to have some much needed alone time with my hubby.. we have never been on a vacation together so this is a first! (even though it is a "mini" vacation, it still counts to me!) I will miss my children so much, but this trip is going to be amazing. I will be going through some awesome terrain, going to be great for pictures! I will make sure to post some when I get back :-)

Before I leave I will be posting some pics from some of my sessions and I promise that I will post more often! Here are some random pics I have done of my family. Enjoy! And wish me luck on my adventure <3

Hope you all had a great Memorial day weekend.. Also, thank you to all of the active duty military and all of the veterans. Thank you to all those that have lost their lives making the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, you will never be forgotten! And, thank you to all the families that are the support and backbone for those serving. <3

Sincerely,

Getting to know Christen... Featured Photographer!

I know it has been a while since I have any posts, and I am sorry for that! I have been so busy. Without anymore delay I want to get into our next featured photographer. This time we are going to get to know Christen Wrighter from Christen Wrighter Photography. She is an on location photographer from Hancock, New York.

Me: How long have you been doing photography (as a hobby and as a profession)?

Christen: I have always adored taking pictures. It really has always been a hobby, even when I was young with disposables. It became an obsession about 3 years ago and I decided to open my business 2 years ago.

Me: What inspired you to start doing photography?

Christen: I can say my children, my husband, my mom, or my heart; but as It strange as it may sound - the truth is: The internet. Don't laugh now, I'm really not one of 'those' photographers, but I have always been fascinated with photography and photographers and the more I researched, watched, read and looked the more intrigued I became.

Me: What are your favorite type of sessions to do and why? (ie: newborn, family, baby/children, engagement)

Christen: Seniors. Hands down. Don't get me wrong - infants, newborns, families - they are all awesome. There is something about the beauty in a teenager that I love to capture. They are so willing to do things and they are out to get the perfect shot just as much as you are.

Me: What would be your best advice to give people who are just starting out in the world of photography?

Christen: Practice. Read. Practice. Read. Seriously - I can't stress that enough. Reading the manual to your camera; no matter what brand or price; knowing your camera and how to use it correctly makes all the difference in the world. Practicing everyday, on anything or anyone can only help you become better. Auto is a dirty word to me anymore, and it show in your photos. Take everything slow, you won't regret it.

Me: Even professionals want to continually improve and better themselves, what is one thing in 2012 that you want to work on to make your work even better than it already is?

Christen: Marketing. This can make or break you. I would love to improve my marketing and utilize my blog more. I would also love the opportunity to visit other states to meet some of the wonderful photographers and mentors I have met through the Internet as well.

Me: When it comes to photography, what is your motto?

Christen: "The only photographer you should compare yourself to is the one you used to be" - I live by this. Comparing yourself to others will only get you down. All I keep in mind during a session is that I want to only get better. If each session is better than the last then I am a winner.

Let's stop a moment in time with Seven Photography

This weeks Featured Photographer is Laci Thorson of Seven Photography. I met Laci a couple months ago, and since then we have developed a great business relationship as well as a great friendship. From the moment I met Laci I could see her passion for her job as a photographer and her desire to truly make her customers happy. Laci has many plans for her business this year and I am so glad to be able to be a part of the creativity! Here is my interview with Laci.

Me: How long have you been doing photography for?

Laci: Business wise almost 2 years but on and off for about 10 years!

Me: What inspired you to start doing photography?

Laci: I have always, for as long as I can remember, loved photography...When I was little, my great aunt had an Annie Leibovitz  book that I looked at every time I was with her, and I could look at that book over and over and it would never get old.  I remember the first photograph I took that gave me goose bumps...and that was inspiration...It was of my oldest daughter Sayler and her little neighbor buddy Dylan they were 4.  They were sitting on a bench, and they both had their arms around one another, and I took the picture from behind. I remember thinking it turned out so great, it could be a postcard...not that it should have been!  Having my kids inspired me as well...I loved them so much I wanted to freeze time and by photographing them it does in a way.  To this day I get inspiration from my kids...and I know I always will, It's love!

Me: What do you hope to achieve with your business in 2012?

Laci: I want my style and aesthetic to grow.  It's important to really hone in on your roots and let it blossom naturally...I never assume I have "made it" I am always learning more and trying more.  I set a new goal almost everyday, and don't move on til I have achieved it.  At the end of 2011, I was happy and eager, I hope at the end of 2012 I will still be happy and eager.

Me: What is your motto when it comes to photography and your business?

Laci: I can really go on and on with this question...I don't know that I have just one motto. I do however know that I will always be true to myself...I am doing photography because I love it. The word PASSION doesn't seem quite big enough.  It makes me feel happy...when I am taking pictures of a senior in high school, I am watching through my lens this young life getting ready to expand their little wings. Their is a determination that plays out and then it comes through on the finished product. The doting mom then cries and the girl jumps up and down and giggles (cause she knows shes got it goin on) that's it...I managed to stop a moment in time...that seems to be flying by so quickly.  It feels good.  So I guess my motto is not about money or notoriety, its about being able to capture a moment in time that will be framed and seen everyday...Imagine your most favorite thoughts that you get to actually look at.
